Born in Ottawa, Canada, Nancy Simmons Smith lived in Mississauga, London, Toronto, Manhattan and Westport, Connecticut before settling down in Peterborough, Ontario where she currently resides.
Art is her second career and non-objective art became an important focus in her life in the early 1990s. She studied painting, drawing and sculpture part-time at Sir Sandford Fleming College, the Peterborough School of Fine Art and the Haliburton School of the Arts where she first met Lila Lewis Irving, her most inspirational teacher. Nancy’s figurative practice is anchored in a weekly life-drawing group who began working together in 2009.
