Renee Makino is an award-winning Mississauga-based contemporary artist, painting in acrylics.
Her paintings are abstractions and interpretations of personal landscapes, inspired by her unique impressions of natural landscapes and of street scenes and architectural elements, particularly the intriguing juxtaposition of built and organic shapes and structures. Many are based on her world travels to both picturesque old towns and to remote locations. Her landscapes have a sense of perspective that draw the viewer into the painting. Renee has a painterly expressionist style, with strong mark-making, mood, and colour. The texture and mark-making in her paintings are often reminiscent of her 1970s abstract woodblock prints created during a stay in Japan.
Renee has studied painting at Sheridan College, Haliburton School of Art, Neilson Park Creative Centre (NPCC), and workshops in Spain, Maine, and Georgian Bay.
She is a member of the Colour and Form Society (CFS) and of the Etobicoke Art Group (EAG), which is based at the Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke, Toronto.
Her works have been exhibited in many juried shows in the Toronto area since 2012. She has received First Prize for her painting "Room with a View" at the 2015 Artworks Oakville Open Juried Show, Third Prize for her painting "A Private View" at the 2016 CFS Biennial Open Juried Exhibition, a number of Honourable Mention Awards, and a People's Choice award.
Renee's paintings and prints are in Canadian and international collections.
